GRISTLE

The soldier secretly eats
the skin from his peeling

feet.  A meager taste,
the texture - used wax paper,

seems rich, like lamb
gristle. His front tooth nibble

is a sharp tremor.  It helps
him remember that before –

a kitchen, it was yellow as it burned,
there was a woman and she broiled.
